This superb Indian Papier Mache Box / Tea Caddy has been hand painted with wonderful mythical characters & then decorated with gold to really lift this beautiful rich piece. The scenes comprise of flying Gods, wrestling, monkeys, snakes, birds, an array of exotic flowers, princes & princesses.

The interior of this Indian box has two removable lids again highly decorated with what appears to be a giant rabbit type beast chasing an Indian princess & prince with a small rabbit / dog & snake on both lids. When both lids are removed it reveals a striking blue ground colour and not many signs of wear.

Papier Mache first originated in Persia and was introduced into Kashmir in the 15th century. Pieces often have a strong Persian influence due to its early origins.
